More importantly, it promises to be a day of fun and joy, a day to be enjoyed by all and remembered for many moons to come.
The theme of the carnival is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and participation is free of charge. Vehicles participating must be licensed (even if only a three day license and arrangements can be made for ‘special’ vehicles with the George 200 Festival office).
Whichever way your company, school, charity or cultural group decides to participate, whether it be a float, marching choir or orchestra, a group of dancers or drum majorettes, the standing committee stresses the fact that George only turns 200 once in a lifetime, so put on your creative thinking caps and come up with something really special (it does not have to cost a fortune).
Schools, charities and cultural groups may apply for a DIY float-building kit supplied by the municipality, however, supplies are limited. Attach a short motivational letter to this effect to your regis-tration form and email to info@gojipr.net, or deliver to George200 Festival office, 72 Hibernia Street, Die Sentrum, first floor (next to Mr Price), or fax 044 873 5594 (attention: Desiree Calitz).
Tin shaking
Registered charity fundraisers are allowed to do make use of tin shaking on this day but they must issue their own tins and handle its administration. A legal permit for tin shaking on 16 April must be obtained from the municipality and it must be registered with the George 200 Festival office in order to be issued with a special sticker. Illegal tins will be confiscated and the contents donated to a registered cha-rity.
Street Carnival format
The Street Carnival will consist of vehicle driven floats, drum majorettes, pedestrian orchestras, pedestrian dance groups, choirs, motorbike processions, vintage cars and even a shopping trolley race.
The procession will be divided into se-veral ‘matched’ groups and will continue proceeding along the route in that particular format. This will prevent ‘congestion’ and add to entertainment value.
Procession route
Participants must be at PW Botha College at 07:00 sharp for the line up. The procession will depart at 09:00 from PW Botha College, exiting at York Street and tra-velling towards Unity Circle and then down York Street again towards PW Botha College where the procession will reach its final destination.
If all goes according to plan, the procession should take approximately three to four hours.
A fun competition will be run for participants and the three categories are: Most original; funniest; and most effort.
Judging will take place during line up.
The cut-off date for participation in the street carnival is Tuesday, 5 April.
