GEORGE NEWS - The Isuzu Ironman 70.3 was a great success in Mossel Bay last weekend on Sunday 17 November. The race saw a whopping 2 500 athletes participating in the Mossel Bay leg of the world's biggest triathlon series.
Ironman 70.3, also known as a half Ironman, is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. The ‘70.3’ refers to the total distance in miles (113km) covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim, a 56-mile (90km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1km) run.
The Mossel Bay swim leg started on Santos Beach with pro men competitors setting off at 06.30, followed by the pro women before the rest of the field hit the calm, clear waters of the bay at five-second intervals.
George Herald spoke to local athlete Zonika van As, about her experience. This was her second Ironman competition.
"Participating in Ironman races has been a life-changing journey for me. I completed my first race in Gqeberha in April, and from that moment there was no turning back. These events are far more than physical challenges - they teach resilience, perseverance, and the importance of community support in life," she says.
She says her journey through Ironman has taught her that you don’t need to be an elite athlete to cross the finish line. With determination and the right people by your side, anyone can take on this challenge. "It’s not a solo endeavour; it’s a team effort."
Nowhere without support
"I’m incredibly fortunate to have a supportive community of family and friends who believe in me, and we all share a passion for helping others achieve their dreams of becoming Ironmen."
Van As believes that whether you’re just starting or contemplating your first race, know that with the right guidance and encouragement, the Ironman journey is within your reach.
"Through these races, I’ve discovered the power of connection and hope to inspire others to take on challenges they once thought impossible. Together, we can make every finish line a reality," she says.
