GEORGE NEWS - A fire at the Haarlem Secondary School on Saturday 24 October destroyed an ablution block, but teaching and learning, including the year-end examinations, will continue without disruption.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed the incident and said the fire was confined to an ablution block that is separate from the main school building.
“The fire destroyed the ablution block. Importantly, the main school buildings, classrooms and examination venue were not damaged or affected,” Hammond said.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and the relevant authorities are investigating it.
Hammond confirmed that the school reopened as normal today, Monday 26 October, and that the year-end examinations would proceed as scheduled.
The WCED is engaging with the school to assess the damage and determine what assistance may be needed.
“The extent of the remedial work and the timeframe for repairs will be determined once the necessary assessments have been completed,” Hammond said.
