GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The Western Cape Department of Mobility, joined by provincial traffic officers from George, conducted a learner transport safety intervention at Thembalethu Primary School this morning, Monday 23 February.
The early-morning intervention focused on improving road safety for learners, promoting safer transport to and from school, and encouraging responsible driver behaviour.
During the operation, vehicles transporting learners, as well as other vehicles in the area, were stopped and inspected.
Officials checked vehicles for roadworthiness and verified driver compliance, including valid driving licences and the necessary permits required to transport passengers.
One man, the driver of a taxi, was pulled over and subjected to a breathalyser test. The driver was arrested for being nearly three times over the legal limit for professional drivers, including taxi and learner transport drivers.
In South Africa, the legal alcohol limit for drivers is less than 0.05g per 100ml of blood and less than 0.24mg per 1000ml of breath. For professional drivers (e.g., taxis, trucks), the limit is stricter at 0.02g per 100ml of blood or 0.10mg/1000ml of breath.
