GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Over 40 heavy motor drivers (operators) participated in the annual Driver of the Year competition on Saturday 21 October.
The event, which aims to promote road safety, took place in the Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre parking lot.
The skilled operators showcased their professional driving.
MTO Group’s John Minnie claimed the Driver of the Year title.
The overall second prize went to Gerrit Saayman in the category for bus drivers. Sarel Sampson of the George Municipality’s Fleet Management Services department was third overall and winner of the rigid trucks category. The other two category winners were Gerrit Jansen of Moreki Solutions in the vans category and James Botha of Unitrans in the rigid drawbar category.
The jovial ambiance and cheery music motivated the operators to deliver their best performance.

Traffic officer Joël Junies confirmed that the operators competed in four categories, namely buses, vans, rigid trucks and articulated vehicles.
