GEORGE NEWS - If you're looking for the perfect event to celebrate Heritage Day, be sure to diarise the Heritage Festival taking place at the George Showground from 23 to 25 September.
This promises to be an exciting event, with all forms of art and performance displays exhibited in the best way South Africans can.
Among the performers that will be on stage at the festival are George High & Kie, Afrikaans Ruk (CPT), Petronel Baard, Hakkiesdraad Hartman and many other locals.
Max Modise, one of the organisers, said South Africans need a reason to believe that the "Rainbow nation project" is still a possibility.
"We all need to find reasons to believe that there is hope, life and possibilities in our day-to-day existence. We are a resilient bunch, South Africans - we thrive against odds, daily. The Heritage Festival is just the tonic we need right now to remind us of who we are.
"The weekend is to celebrate our heritage that is as diverse as South Africa, including our diverse cultures, regardless of looks, background and upbringing. We are a melting pot of diverse heritage and culture, but one nation all in the ilk of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, who cared deeply about Ubuntu," said Modise.
He added that artists of various formats and music genres have been starved of opportunities to exhibit and perform during the last two years or so because of health restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Your attendance will serve as contribution to artists' livelihoods; because of lack of performing opportunities, some artists have become impoverished and depressed, some downright destitute. Through the festival, we hope to feed hundreds of artists' families through your contribution to this event.
"We all need to play our part in putting something back into artists' livelihoods. We hope to learn, imbibe and revel in each other's cultures, as we sing, dance and celebrate as one, together," Modise said.
"As a supporter, patron or performer, you will be part of a movement that will help to promote social cohesion, while celebrating our diversity for that weekend."
