GEORGE NEWS - The benevolence of Georgians has amazed cancer survivor Ingrid Watkins since she started to promote the services of Wings of Hope Cancer Support in the middle of last year.
This non-profit organisation has branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and George. In the past year, while promoting Wings of Hope, she has come to value interaction with volunteers from Reach for Recovery and the local branch of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).
"I am continually impressed with how helpful and kind everyone is and with the network of people that exists in this sphere," she says.
Wings of Hope has a national WhatsApp group for survivors and cancer fighters who share information and provide encouragement across the provinces.
"Members are compassionate as they have first-hand experience of the emotional and physical effects of cancer. Being part of the group helped me tremendously on my journey. There is no need to face the battle on your own," says Watkins.
For people preferring more confidential interaction, one-on-one support is also provided.
Wings of Hope has opened its doors to patients suffering from all types of cancer and survivors who need the support, and it organises events and Zoom meetings with guest speakers to enlighten all who attend.
"Our aim is to hold meetings and events in George where people can share their journey, practical hints and tips and enjoy happy moments together, as well as listen to expert guest speakers on the topic of cancer and its treatment," says Watkins.
Cancer survivors, people being treated for cancer and their families and friends are invited to contact Watkins on 083 345 4764 for more information.
