GEORGE NEWS - The chamber choir Eden Camerata presents a combination of sacred, secular and light music on Saturday 14 September at the Market Community Theatre in Market Street.
The performance starts at 16:00 and tickets cost R100.
The choir, under the direction of Dr André van Zyl, sings mostly a cappella (without instruments), although some songs are accompanied by piano. Their repertoire includes songs in multiple languages, such as Afrikaans, English, French, German, Hungarian, Latin, Swedish and isiZulu.
Works include compositions by Elgar, Gjeilo, Lamprecht, Mozart, Schubert and Van Wyk.
Humble beginnings
After the Covid pandemic, a few singers from George decided to establish a small chamber choir.
Eden Camerata was founded on 5 June 2022.
Within a few weeks, the membership grew from six to nine; currently the choir has 18 members.
Their motto, 'Caritas et Amor' (compassion and love), reflects their commitment towards each other and the community, as portrayed through song and performance.
Highlights of 2022 included an honorary performance for Prof Chris Lamprecht on his 95th birthday; joint performances with the well-known Palissander choir and the George Male Choir; as well as performances in the Old Toll House and retirement villages.
In 2023 the choir performed the well-known Schubert Mass # 2 in G major, jointly with the Ffortissimo choir, soloists and orchestra.
In 2024, the choir hosted the famous ATKV Applous competition for the South Cape Region in George; participated in the CCNF choir festival in the Feather Market Theatre in Gqeberha; and participated in the choir festival in George with the Rhodes University Chamber Choir, George Male Choir and Voce Excellencia choir.
Eden Camerata will perform at the Market Community Theatre on 14 September.
