GEORGE NEWS - A woman (33) from Thembalethu was brutally attacked by her 38-year-old partner on Monday 16 August at their home in Lusaka Street, Zone 4.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, the couple had an argument early that evening after the suspect allegedly accused the victim of having an affair. He assaulted her and left the house.
"When he returned at about 21:30 after apparently going drinking, he continued to assault the victim by hitting her with a hammer against the head. He also hit her with various other objects after which he proceeded to rape her," said Pojie.
The victim later managed to escape and went to her neighbours, who alerted police. She was immediately hospitalised and has since been discharged to a place of safety where she is receiving counselling and support.
Meanwhile, the community mobilised and launched a massive manhunt for the suspect. He was found the next morning and handed over to the police.
"The suspect has been charged with rape and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm," said Pojie.
He made his first appearance in the George Magistrate's Court on Thursday 19 August where the case was postponed to 1 September for a formal bail application.
The suspect may not be identified as this will identify the victim of a sexual offence, which is against the law.
