GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA issued a statement warning the public to be vigilant of illegal donkey traders trawling George.
This follows an incident this weekend when two suspicious men approached a local business (with donkeys on their premises), offering to buy their donkeys.
The SPCA said they suspect the men, driving a white minibus with a CAW registration number plate, are illegal traders in donkey skins.
“The donkeys get killed in the most atrocious ways for their skins. They often skin them alive and leave them to die slowly in agony, sometimes they bash their heads in and then skin them whilst they are unconscious and they wake in agony," read the statement.
"It is illegal to deal in donkey skins and just as illegal to sell donkeys to these cruel people if the seller knows what they are going to do with them."
If anyone is approached by the men with regard to donkeys, they must please call the SPCA on 044 878 1990 or after hours on 082 378 7384 immediately.
