FAK Managing Director Dr Danie Langer handed over an award for an 'exceptional cultural achievement'.
The project had its origin in a dream of Gerda Stols and her late husband Johan to save and preserve the Toll House which was then in a dilapidated and vandalised state. Their idea was born in 1999, but an uphill struggle followed to determine on whose property the building was situated and to obtain approval from all the relevant authorities.
Once a permit from Heritage Western Cape was obtained and Public Works, the owner of the property gave the go-ahead, the next hurdle was obtaining funds and building materials.
