All eyes on today's Special Council Meeting with inauguration of new mayor

GEORGE NEWS - The mayoral inauguration taking place at the George Civic Centre was briefly halted for a 30-minute caucus by request of the DA and PBI.

Today the new mayor of George will be announced. This follows after former mayor Leon van Wyk received a seat in the Provincial Legislature earlier this month.

The Special Council Meeting is currently sitting at the George Civic Centre. This is not the norm, since council meetings typically are held via MS Teams since the pandemic.

The cost of having regular meetings in the civic centre has been sited as one of the main reasons why this is only done for special occasions.

The meeting today was opened with a prayer from Ina von Brandis, Jackie von Brandis' mom, over a digital platform, since she is currently on holiday in the UK. Jackie von Brandis' name has been on everybody's lips as the DA's choice for the next mayor of George.
