GEORGE NEWS - Learners from across the Eden Karoo Education District are gearing up for this year's Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair, which will take place at the George Civic Centre over the next two days.
The event promises to be a celebration of curiosity, creativity and problem-solving as young scientists present projects across a variety of disciplines. This year's theme is 'Artificial Intelligence (AI)', a tool in the hands of learners, helping them address real-world challenges in their own communities.
Visitors are welcome to view the projects from 12:30 on Saturday.
Categories on dis-play include agricultural science, computer science and software development, Earth sciences, energy, engineering, environmental studies, plant sciences and social sciences.
Participating schools in George include Dellville Park Primary, Kretzenshoop Primary, Hoërskool Outeniqua and Thembalethu Secondary.
In Oudtshoorn, Aurial College, De Villiers Primary and Bridgton Secondary will be represented. Others include Concordia High (Knysna), Murray High (Plettenberg Bay), Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale (Riversdale) and Panorama Primary (Riversdale), Hoërskool Punt (Mossel Bay), Still By The Sea (Still Bay) and John D Crawford Primary (Beaufort West).
Problem-solving
From innovative farming techniques to solutions for protecting the environment, these young scientists are showing how AI can speed up research, improve problem-solving and inspire fresh ideas.
However, the expo's organisers emphasise that AI must be used responsibly. "AI should support your learning, not do the work for you. We want to see your thinking, your creativity and your passion in every project," says Pieter Kirstein, the science fair deputy director. Compiled by Michelle Pienaar
