For Hanneli Jongen, the early-morning chill of the ocean on Saturday 11 October meant more than just a swim - it was a moment of joy and gratitude.
Now in remission, Jongen was deeply touched to discover that some friends and acquaintances had joined the Secret Swim event especially for her.
For others, the occasion carried personal meaning, too.
Gayle Botes took the plunge in honour of a close friend who is also only recently out of remission, while one woman travelled all the way from Pretoria to join her friends at Herold's Bay for the special day.

The beach was a sea of pink as about 140 participants, and a few spontaneous joiners, gathered for the swim, which raised funds for early breast cancer detection through the I Love Boobies campaign.
"It's the first time the event has been held in George," said organiser Isla Maree, "but definitely not the last!"

George had the fourth biggest turnout of all 17 venues across the country.
It was a jolly occasion with lots of food and laughter, and fresh coffee with pink cupcakes after a dip in the ocean.
Unlike traditional races, the Secret Swim is a gathering of remembrance and celebration, uniting women across South Africa in support of breast cancer awareness.
With venues in Plettenberg Bay and 15 other secret locations, the initiative - founded in 2016 - helps fund over 1 000 life-saving breast cancer screenings each year for women in underserved communities.
