GEORGE NEWS - This Mandela Day, the ladies of the George Service Clubs (GSC) office marked their 67 minutes of service by reaching out to some of the most vulnerable in our community.
They visited the George Night Shelter, where they handed out hot dogs and spent some time connecting with the residents, many of whom are elderly, ill or down on their luck.
The team also had the pleasure of meeting Rina Smit, who runs the shelter with remarkable love and dedication.
For just R25 a day, the shelter offers residents a warm meal, coffee and tea, clean bedding and a safe place to sleep.
For those who are ill or elderly, daytime care is also provided. The shelter is a vital lifeline for many, but it needs ongoing support.
Donations of supplies, daily bread (local bakeries are especially encouraged to help) and volunteer time are always welcome.
To lend a hand or make a donation, contact Smit on 044 873 2787 or visit the shelter at 123 Memorium Street, George Central.
