GEORGE NEWS - Five men were arrested this week in connection with the attempted hijacking of a truck on the N2 near Thembalethu. The incident happened at about 02:15 on Saturday 19 November.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the driver of the truck was on his way to Pacaltsdorp when he was stopped and accosted by a group of men armed with pangas and a firearm.
Spies did not give any detail about how the truck was brought to a standstill. The driver was allegedly forced to stop his vehicle and upon inspection he was overpowered by the suspects and robbed of his personal belongings.
He managed to escape the mob unharmed and fled the scene. No cargo was taken from the vehicle.
Five suspects were arrested by Tuesday afternoon with stolen property in their possession. They were taken into custody and scheduled to make their first court appearance later this week.
