LIFESTYLE NEWS - The market is saturated with chemical products and insect repellents that can ward off mosquitoes but what if you’re looking for more eco-friendly options?
Here are some home remedies that have proven effective, cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
For your home:
1. Dry ice
Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale. Dry ice emits a lot of carbon dioxide so place some dry ice in a container and keep it at a distance. In no time, the mosquitoes will be flocking towards it and once they’re inside the container, close the lid. This method requires a little patience but you won’t regret it.
2. Coffee grounds
While a lot of people enjoy the taste of coffee, some insects find it toxic. Coffee grounds can be an effective way to kill mosquito eggs. All you have to do is sprinkle a little coffee wherever you find small amounts of water around your house. The mosquito eggs present in the water will be forced to come to the surface of the water because of the coffee grounds. They will be deprived of oxygen as they get to the surface and you won’t have to worry about populations of mosquitoes raiding your home.
3. Create your own mosquito traps
If you do not want to spend money on a mosquito trap, why not create your own?
Cut a plastic bottle in half. Add brown sugar in a cup of hot water and mix well. When it cools down, empty it in the bottom half of the bottle. Now, add yeast. Put the funnel part into the bottle upside down. Wrap tape around the bottle and watch the mosquitoes fly in.
For your body
4. Neem and Coconut Oils
To create a mosquito repellent that is also used as a natural pesticide, mix an equal ratio of Neem and Coconut oil and apply it all over your body. The strong smell of the mixture will keep mosquitoes away for eight hours.
5. Citronella Oil
Citronella oil is considered one of the best oils to ward off mosquitoes. Apply the oil all over your body or on your sheets. You can also apply a few drops on a candle and light it, this should keep the little rascals away.
6. Tea Tree Oil
The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties in tea tree oil work wonders when it comes to fighting off mosquitoes. Just mix the oil with water and apply the mixture on exposed parts of your body and face.
