LIFESTYLE NEWS - It’s that time of year again where thousands of Matric students are preparing to write their preliminary exams.
The final exams of your schooling career can be a daunting task and preparing for it can be stressful at the best of times.
So to ease the pressure and prepare you for the journey ahead here are some tips and tricks from the National Collaboration Education Trust:
Eat Healthy and get enough sleep
You should get enough sleep. At this age, Grade 12s should have a minimum of six to eight hours of sleep at night; this is particularly important the night before an exam. Eat healthy, regular meals and snacks to keep energy levels up.
Make sure you have time to do some sort of physical exercise. Stay well hydrated and drink lots of water and avoid excessive caffeine, particularly in the evening.
Use your study leave wisely
Plan out your day wisely. When you are off, use the time to study and try to do so as early as possible. This will help avoid procrastination which causes unnecessary panic a day before the exam.
Use your breaks wisely
When you take a break, limit time on social media; it can become hugely time consuming and addictive to scroll through Instagram or YouTube, leaving much less time for revision. It’s important to get the balance right. Short breaks from studying will lead to more productive study time.
Practice makes perfect
When studying, make use of all past papers available at your disposal. Revising past exams will help you prepare on what to expect in your exam which can be found on the Woza Matrics campaign site.
Stay positive
The most important thing is to remain positive until the exams are completed
Sometimes this will be tough, but in the end, your result will reflect the amount of work you put in.
Connect to people who are supportive
It’s important to have a good support system or circle of friends who support and encourage you during this stressful time. Your mental health is important so leaning on a support system will help.
Remember to have down-time
While you have to study, be sure to also factor in some relaxing time for yourself. Do things to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.
Maintaining balance
Model a healthy balance by going out for a walk or watching a favourite TV programme when you've been locked in studies for hours to give yourself a break.
Create a schedule
This will mentally prepare yourself before the exams. It is important to allocate sufficient amounts of hours to a hard subject to become familiar with the content.
Create a study group
Everyone has their own way of learning that can be useful as each student can provide information, however this may not work for everyone. It is also an effective way of challenging yourself as it encourages creative thinking to gain a better understanding of the material.
