GEORGE NEWS - Celebrating with a big gala event, a red carpet, the whole Hollywood experience - this is what popular local comedian Moses Williams plans for his next show, with which he wants to thank his loyal supporters in George. The Red Carpet Gala will take place on 4 April at the George Arts Theatre.
Williams never imagined his life would turn out this way. "I wanted to be a policeman. Where I come from [Graaff-Reinet] the police are heroes. People actually still listen to them and are afraid of them."
He says when he moved to George at high school age, his life made a 180-degree turn as he got involved in 'drama'.
At George High, he was told to join the drama department after failing one of his subjects. This is where he met Ricardo Cupido, who steered his life in a different direction. Cupido, a mentor at the youth development organisation LoveLife, says Williams wanted to do nothing but perform.
"He was always in trouble, but I saw leadership qualities in him. So I went to the school and told them that he needs to change subjects and do drama."
And as they say, that was the beginning of many great things for Williams, who went on to win many drama awards and trophies for the school. He has also built a loyal fan base who follow him online, attend his shows, buy his DVDs and expect him to deliver their tickets at home!
"I spoiled them from the beginning to deliver tickets personally, but as I grow in the business I will in future have to do it more professionally. But for now, I still have the luxury to do that."
Williams thanks Godfrey van Rhyn and Basil Myners for their support in making this show possible.
He plans a total extravaganza where he will perform new material and showcase a few VIP speakers. The George High Jazz band is also part of the line-up.
"I have worked with some big names in the industry, and know what I can do and what I am worth. But this evening is for those people who have always supported me and believed in me," says Williams.
