GEORGE NEWS - Electricians working on electricity connections in Thembalethu on Tuesday had to withdraw because residents threw stones at them. According to municipal media liaison officer, Athane Scholtz, the electricity for about 50 houses in Zone 8, Thembalethu, remains off, as the electricians could not complete their work.
"George Municipality was requested by the police to assist with the removal of illegal connections following ongoing animosity between those who are legally connected versus those who are not. SAPS accompanied staff this morning and repairs were near completion," said Scholtz.
"As there was no visible threat and only final switch-on processes to be done, SAPS moved on, upon which opportunistic residents started throwing stones."
George Municipality reiterates that it cannot subject staff and essential service providers to ongoing threats of violence and cannot make repairs or disconnect illegal connections during unrest.
The municipality urgently appeals to residents to remain calm, to not incite violence and to support and protect officials that are performing essential services. Report attempts to connect illegally to the police as soon as you notice it.
