GEORGE NEWS - The Yeboneers youth development organisation, in partnership with George libraries, held a school holiday programme at libraries in George with indigenous games and story hour for the little ones, giving them something to look forward to during the school holidays.
YearBeyond, or YeBo, is a Youth Service partnership between the Western Cape Government, the Community Chest of the Western Cape, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and numerous NGOs.
It aims to provide 18- to 25-year-olds with meaningful work experience and a pathway to further studies or work while at the same time encouraging a culture of active citizenship and volunteerism.
Fifty-five Yeboneers are placed at nine libraries in the George area - George, Conville, Pacaltsdorp, Thembalethu, Blanco, Touwsranten, Waboomskraal, Uniondale and Haarlem - where they advocate reading and libraries as fun, recreational and educational.
In addition the Yeboneers address and improve the literacy and numeracy skills of the young through the 1 000 Stories library project. Some crèches were also targeted to participate in the holiday programme over the past three weeks.
A total of 1 020 kids participated in the holiday programmes in Blanco.
