GEORGE NEWS - Storm winds wreaked havoc across the Southern Cape last night with the George municipal area hard hit by several veld fires and numerous power outages.
The highest wind speed recorded overnight in George was 65km/h, with wind speeds of up to 30km/h predicted for today.
George Municipality says the affected areas will remain without power until trees are cut, roads are cleared and lines are repaired.
Affected areas include:
- Areas in Thembalethu
- A portion of Herolds Bay and surrounding farms
- Geelhoutboom
- Farmlands farms
- Victoria Heights, Blackwood line
- Wilderness Heights
- Wilderness East
- Le Grand, and
- Hansmoeskraal
Uniondale is off due to an ESKOM fault.
Some repairs might take a full day.
Fires:
The fire at the George Landfill Site is still active.
Several veldfires were attended to overnight in Rosemore, Blue Moutain, Pacaltsdorp, and Geelhoutboom and have been doused. Fallen trees have also caused damage to homes and other infrastructure.
