The festival was sponsored by local company Sevenpointfive, with all co-sponsors also being local: George Herald, McDonald's, Wilderness Quick Spar, Oakhurst Insurance and Cinnabar Creative Design.
The Wilderness Beach Fest has grown exceptionally quickly over the last three years and is the core fundraiser for the local Sea Rescue station. This year again anchored by the social volleyball tournament, the festival firmly targeted family fun in the sun. Despite the windy conditions kids enjoyed plentiful games and competitions, with face painting, sack races and egg throwing being firm favourites.
The volleyball tournament, this year with 26 teams, was won by one of the Oakhurst Insurance teams, the 'Fire Breathing Rubber Oaks', with 'Team Salticracks' coming in second after a closely fought final, and the Sea Rescue team managing a respectable third place. The team spirit award went to none other than Sevenpointfive.
Between games the participants and visitors enjoyed music, tug-of-war, dips in the sea and tubing down the river, wors rolls and cold beverages, and were treated to an exciting finish to Sedgefield to Wilderness surfski race, in wild surf conditions.
The Wilderness Sea Rescue would like to thanks all the sponsors and donors, big and small.
"Without you, this event would not be the successful fundraiser for our essential rescue service. We also want to thank many volunteers, not just our crew and their supportive families, but local residents and supporters, who have taken our station into their hearts, by means of their unselfish support and actions - again too many to name, but you all know who you are. For now, thank you, with all our gratitude. Till next year, same beach, same vibe, better still," said Torsten Henschel from the Wilderness NSRI.
