GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Eden Cluster police have arrested a total of 386 suspects in the Southern Cape between Thursday afternoon, 5 May and Sunday 8 May. 261 of these arrests were for reported crimes, 22 on warrants of arrests and 79 for serious crime reported within the three-day-period.
This weekend’s operations included high visibility blue light patrols in crime-stricken areas, stop and search operations with a special focus on drug and liquor outlets, illegal firearms, the tracing of wanted suspects and the confiscation of dangerous weapons.
Supporting the George crime prevention unit with the execution of search warrants during the weekend, police confiscated 216 litres of liquor from a premises in Touwsranten and arrested a suspect for illegally dealing in liquor.
On Friday evening a suspect (25) was arrested for dealing in drugs in Zone 8, Thembalethu, after 249 Mandrax tablets, three bankies of tik and a substantial amount of cash were found in his possession. This arrest came as an result of information received from the community.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, various suspects were arrested for the possession of dangerous weapons that have the potential to inflict grievous bodily harm.
"This in the aftermath of violent crimes that had claimed the lives of victims and [in] which the community are being held hostage [with such weapons]," he said.
