The boy (15), whose name has not been made public yet, was swimming with two younger friends (both 13) when they were swept out to sea by rip currents at around 13:00.
One of the boys managed to swim to safety while the other was rescued by a brave 15-year-old surfer, Wade Tiran, from York High School. The boys were taken to hospital and released the same day after they received medical attention.
The NSRI commended Wade on his action on Tuesday.
Craig Lambinon, the NSRI spokesperson, said, "The Grade 9 learner, Wade Tiran, who was surfing nearby with his friend, Dylan Hemphiell, had noticed the three children were in difficulty and Wade had gone to their aid noticing that the one child had made it out of the water safely. Wade then paddled up to one of the children and used the floatation of his surfboard to assist the child out of the water to the beach. He and Dylan then searched for the missing child until the emergency services took over a search."
According to information, the three boys were alone at the beach at the time of the incident.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Wilderness, the AMS helicopter, Metro EMS and ER24 were all on the scene.
The NSRI urges parents to ensure that their children have responsible adult supervision around coastal and inland waters.
