GEORGE NEWS - Three suspects were arrested for sexual offences in George during the last week. One of them is only 14 years old.
On Friday 12 August, a 20-year-old victim was on her way home to Thembalethu when she was allegedly accosted near Borcherds on the N2.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, it happened after the victim asked the suspect for a cigarette. He grabbed her and "pulled her into the bushes next to the highway where he raped her,” said Pojie. “During the ordeal the victim noticed a passer-by and screamed for help."
The suspect ran off in the direction of the Pacaltsdorp industrial area near York Street and was arrested shortly afterwards.
Boy (14) arrested for sex crime
A seven-year-old girl was allegedly sexually violated by a 14-year-old boy in Parkdene on Wednesday 10 August.
Pojie said the victim told her mother about the incident shortly afterwards and the suspect, who is known to the victim, was identified and arrested. "After assessment the suspect was released into the care of his parents pending further investigation," said Pojie.
Man in court for rape in Thembalethu
A man was arrested in Thembalethu after he allegedly forced himself onto a woman on Monday night, 8 August.
"The victim alleges that she and the suspect were drinking together after which he demanded to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent," said Pojie.
The victim reported the incident to the Thembalethu police and the suspect was arrested by the George Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit shortly afterwards. According to Pojie the suspect appeared in the George Magistrate's Court last week and was remanded in custody pending a formal bail application.
The Garden Route District Commissioner, Maj-Gen Norman Modishana, praised the members involved in bringing these suspects to book. He urged police to go the extra mile to defend and uphold the fundamental rights of all women, without any prejudice.
