GEORGE NEWS - Advocate Thelma Heyns was "arrested" on Thursday afternoon for a different kind of advocacy - the protection and promotion of animal rights.
Heyns was "reported" to the Garden Route SPCA by her entrepreneur husband, Jovan.
She was arrested at her home shortly after 15:00 on 18 July by inspector Gerda Reynders and taken to her cell where she spent the afternoon getting to know her adorable cell mate, Krummels, who is up for adoption.
Jovan and Thelma, the successful, well-known and well-loved singing couple, have long been loyal supporters of the Garden Route SPCA and decided to add their weight to the 2019 Mandela Day fundraiser. No strangers to giving, they contribute to several charitable functions annually for causes that are close to their hearts.
Salome Bruyns, manager at GRSPCA, says the couple personally donated R2 500 with the support of friends, family and the business community of George, and raised in excess of R10 000 within an hour of Thelma's arrest.
"Every Mandela Day, we reflect on Mr Mandela's legacy and this year we wanted to shine the spotlight on animal rights and care. We would like to thank everyone for their generous support and we urge you to make regular donations to the GRSPCA - every little bit helps. We hope everyone enjoyed giving back and shining their lights this Mandela Day!" said Bruyns.
The SPCA asks the public to keep donating food, toys and blankets at the supporting supermarkets and outlets.
