As from 1837 it was called Victoria Square, and later Jubilee Square.
In the 1920s it was named the Memorial Garden and in 1933 the name was changed to Garden of Remembrance.
A war memorial plaque was erected in the garden for soldiers who had died in the war.
This War Memorial Monument was moved in 2004 to the Garden Route Botanical Garden in Caledon Street.
Presently, the "garden", after partially being changed into a traffic circle, is known as Unity Park.
