GEORGE NEWS - A teenager (14) from Conville has been placed in police custody after he allegedly stabbed a 12-year-old boy to death on Sunday 22 August.
According to a press release sent out by Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, the victim, Austin Kiewiets, and his friends were accompanying another friend home when the young suspect accosted them in Tinktinkie Street at approximately 12:45.
“It is alleged that the suspect drew a knife and stabbed the deceased in the left side of his chest. He succumbed to the injury on the scene and was later declared dead by paramedics who responded to the incident,” said Pojie. “It is reported that the suspect fled the scene on foot. However, within an hour after the incident, his parents handed him over to the Conville police. He is currently being assessed by a social worker.”
The suspect, who is being charged with murder, is due to make his first court appearance later today, Monday 23 August.
The motive for the senseless killing is still to be confirmed.
Eden Cluster Commander, Maj-Gen Oswald Reddy, has expressed his shock and dismay that lives so young could be destroyed so quickly in such a horrific way. “One wonders whether this could be evident to the moral deterioration of our young society,” he said. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and urged parents and communities to adopt the concept of “my child is your child”.
