GEORGE NEWS - The challenges of a pregnant or parenting teen are overwhelming, but at Options Care Centre various support mechanisms exist and moms are assisted to either stay in school or return to school, says the director, Laurie Edwall.
A 'Teen Moms' support group meets weekly where group members also encourage one another to continue with their schooling.
"Emotional and spiritual support, and having family support, makes a huge difference, and our mission includes bringing reconciliation within families when everyone is in crisis."
Options assists the girls with setting goals for their school work and also offers coaching to help them stay on track at school.
"We celebrate with the teen moms as it is not easy to stay in school and parent a baby, but we have some amazing young women who have been extremely successful in their schooling and have gone on to tertiary studies. Some are now in their professions of choice and are earning good salaries."
They also offer individual and group pre and post-natal classes that help their clients build attachment and have a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
"Practical support of food, baby clothing/toiletries, and school supplies are available for Options teen clients if needed. All our services are free of charge, " says Edwall.
Abortion
Those struggling with an abortion decision are welcome to make contact with Options for confidential help.
Legacy Dad workshop
The father of the baby is also welcome at Options. They have a 'Legacy Dad' workshop for young fathers that provides support, information and a place to talk with other young fathers.
Edwall says support from teachers, church members, other learners and neighbours also makes a positive impact.
"Providing opportunities for teen parents with holiday jobs, bursaries and not being excluded from youth events helps them overcome stigma and continue to achieve their goals and dreams. Assistance with safe child care is also helpful," says Edwall.
Options receives no state funds, but has to generate its own funding. It holds an annual gala event at Fancourt that is well supported and helps with funding.
