GEORGE NEWS - Sea Rescue volunteers from the region braved the cold ocean on Thursday 21 June for their traditional "Winter Solstice Swim" held at the NSRI Wilderness (Station 23) near the Wilderness main beach. On the shortest day of the year, crew of NSRI Wilderness were joined by Metro Rescue and lifeguards from both Outeniqua and Knysna Surf lifesaving clubs for an icy plunge, followed by hot chocolate at a bonfire.
Michael Vonk, deputy commander of Station 23 Wilderness, summarised the annual ritual.
"The Winter Solstice Swim marks the countdown to summer and is a great opportunity for rescue services, who work so closely together to save lives at sea, to meet up and connect."
Local lifesavers from Metro, Wilderness NSRI and lifeguards from both Outeniqua and Knysna Surf lifesaving clubs took the plunge last Thursday, keeping their annual Sea Rescue Winter Solstice Swim.
