GEORGE NEWS - While a man who was in custody at Thembalethu Regional Court tried to escape last week, the George cluster is still looking for a man who escaped from the Plettenberg Police Station about seven years ago.
According to Captain Bernadine Steyn, Southern Cape Police spokesperson, Brendon Charl Blignaut (35) escaped from the police station in the early hours of 6 September 2008.
This follows after Blignaut allegedly indecently assaulted a woman, who gave him a lift to a backpackers lodge in Plettenberg Bay on that day. He was arrested on the same day in connection with the incident and was taken to the police station where he escaped from custody while he was being processed.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident is unclear," said Steyn.
A warrant of arrest was issued by the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on 29 September 2008 for escaping police custody.
Blignaut's last known address is Tinus De Long Street, Sunnydale, Johannesburg. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is requested to contact Warrant Officer Andries Snyman on 044 803 4531.
Meanwhile, the suspect who tried to walk out of the Thembalethu Regional Court just minutes after he was taken to the holding cells after his case was postponed by Magistrate Eugenia Jacobs on Wednesday 6 May, is to remain in custody until his next court appearance in August. The suspect was caught just outside the courtroom by one of the court orderlies.
