GEORGE NEWS - For keen fisherman Ankylo Laws, a young man from George, 9 January 2021 was a date of note - and it had nothing to do with Covid or lockdown!
It was the day he won the fight with his first "Big One", pulling a good-sized leervis (garrick) from the Great Brak River.
Leervis are known for being ferocious fighters, which is why Ankylo was extra chuffed to land it after a 20-minute tussle. Ankylo's catch weighed in at 3kg and was 72cm long.
An uncle who has been angling for 30 years said not even he has ever been so lucky to catch a garrick that size.
Ankylo's parents would have loved to get a taste of the "leerie", but he has frozen it to have it made into a trophy by a taxidermist, and they had to settle for feasting on the two other edible fish he caught that weekend.
