GEORGE NEWS - Police are still to make an arrest after a husband (64) and wife (62) were assaulted and robbed in their home in Ballots Bay Heights on Monday evening, 6 June.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies, three unidentified men entered the residence at about 18:45 and proceeded to the living room where they accosted the couple.
"The wife was forced to the ground by the men while her husband was assaulted using unknown objects. He sustained serious head injuries. The suspects made off with some jewellery before they fled the scene," said Spies.
Both victims were taken to hospital for medical care and the husband was admitted to ICU due to serious head injuries. George Herald has since learned from a trusted source that both are recovering well.
The source also confirmed that another resident in the area, a single lady, also fell victim to a housebreaking earlier this year in April. However she escaped unharmed as her neighbour managed to chase the perpetrator away.
It appears as if this incident was not reported to the police, as they do not have any record of it. In both cases the suspects sustained injuries.
Spies confirmed that police stepped up patrols in crime hotspots in the area in an effort to combat serious and violent crime.
"The [deploymentof the] Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team, the rural flying squad, public order police and K9 units ... in addition to members from various police stations, will be maintained. Good partnerships already exist with various crime-fighting partners such as security companies, neighbourhood and farm watches as well as other law enforcement agencies," he said.
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators is requested to contact the Thembalethu police station on 044 802 8950 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidentially.
