GEORGE NEWS - The Executive Committee of Senate of the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has announced that the start of the year-end examinations at the George Campus have been postponed. The decision by the management follows the evacuation of all staff and students from the campus on Monday 29 October, and the proximity of fires around and on the route to the campus. Students were hosted at designated off-campus venues for three nights, primarily to avoid potential discomfort caused by smoke in the area.
While no buildings or facilities were directly impacted by the fires, there was temporary loss of power, and there is still heavy smoke in the area. It was deemed wise to defer the exams in the interests of safety and well-being.
Examinations for George Campus
The year-end examinations planned to start yesterday, Wednesday 31 October, have been deferred until next week. Examinations that should have been written in the time frame Wednesday 31 October to Saturday 3 November, will now be taken at the end of the exam period, from 21 to 24 November. The rest of the exams will continue as per the exam timetable.
The only exception is the B Tech Block students (Forestry and Wood Technology) who will continue their assessment this week. Students should contact the academic administrator should they experience any challenges in this regard.
Although no NMU George Campus buildings were destroyed in this week's fire in George and surrounds, cellphone towers that serve the campus have been damaged.

This may affect cellphone reception and a lack of Wi-Fi access may be experienced in some areas of the campus. The campus and surroundings are being constantly monitored and flare-ups are being attended to. University staff returned to their offices yesterday, Wednesday 31 October.
Students who need further assistance with exam-related concerns can contact academic administrator Desmond Scholtz at desmond.scholtz@mandela.ac.za.
