Update
GEORGE NEWS - George Municipal employees in the civil engineering department staged an unprotected demonstration in front of the department's offices in York Street on Tuesday 1 August, demanding to learn the outcome of the Tuned Assessment of Skills and Attitudes (Task) evaluations which determines job grading and salaries.
The workers have been in limbo for years about the outcomes and how it would affect them, and have staged more than one demonstration, most recently on 21 February.
The issue at hand is the finalisation of the job descriptions, which affect their salaries. They said the top structure of the municipality has been evaluated by Task and they wanted theirs to be finalised too.
Mfundo Mtamo, shop steward for Samwu, came out of the building and asked the group to gather a delegation that would meet municipal representatives in the following hour.
Chantel Edwards-Klose, spokesperson for the George Municipality, confirmed yesterday, 2 August that a meeting with the union representative and management had taken place. Both recognised unions, Samwu and Imatu, participated in the meeting.
George Samwu chairperson Sandile Lingali said that the municipality will respond officially by today, 3 August. "It was agreed that the result of the Task evaluation will be implemented by the end of August."
Edwards-Klose said that the Task job evaluation process will be handled within the George Municipality in line with the relevant guidelines.
"We are in process to make the administrative arrangements which also include the provision on the budget, for the implementation of the audit reports we received. The same process will be followed for positions for which we are still awaiting the audit outcome, as well as positions which will be evaluated and re-evaluated. All relevant employees will be informed of their audited outcome."
