GEORGE NEWS - All dressed up and places to go. Members of the George Police, led by the George SAPS Women's Network, walked the city streets on Friday morning, 17 October, in support of people directly or indirectly affected by cancer. For some members who are also cancer survivors, the awareness drive is close to home.
Sergeant Badikazi Nonyukela, chairperson of the George SAPS Women's Network, said this network is a national SAPS initiative aimed at creating a supportive framework the service's women.
Through this, these women aim not only to empower one another, but also to offer emotional support to all members of the SAPS and the broader public.
The George SAPS team came out in their numbers to support the SAPS Cancer Awareness Walk on 17 October.
Brigadier Luthando Nosilela, the George Police Station's commander, is a firm supporter of women's empowerment and a passionate champion of community development and upliftment programmes. He believes that by creating opportunities for positive change, we begin to address the root causes of social ills, crime and other challenges. In his speech, he reminded the participants that, as reflected in the gospel of John, when those filled with the Spirit see to those who are low in spirit, they lift them up. Creating awareness and offering support, no matter how big or small, makes a difference. He added that God hears the prayers of those who consistently seek to know and follow His will.
Colonel Adele van der Poll, Detective Commander, George SAPS, echoed his sentiments, reminding the team that small gestures of hope, unity and strength go a long way. She honoured those who are still fighting cancer and reiterated that cancer does not discriminate based on race, gender, age or stature. She thanked the team for giving their time to support a worthy cause.
