Update
GEORGE NEWS - Mediclinic Southern Africa confirmed in a statement on Tuesday 2 August that the development project of the new Mediclinic George hospital in York Street at Mount View Resort will soon proceed.
Hospital general manager Kassie Karstens said the project experienced some delays as a result of reprioritisation of resources during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We are excited by this development, with the ground breaking expected to take place in January 2023, after preparation of supporting infrastructure has been completed. The construction is expected to take approximately two years.
"By relocating the hospital's services to a single venue, Mediclinic will offer our patients world-class care, as well as expanding our services and capacity to meet the needs of the community," said Karstens.
The project will result in the centralising of the current Mediclinic George and Mediclinic Geneva services into one facility. The newly built hospital will offer all the services currently available, including radiology and pathology, with associated specialists moving to the new location.
New additions are the catheterisation lab, an additional theatre and a further 12 licenced beds. There will be easily accessible additional parking at the hospital and it is located close to public transport.
"Plans include the addition of solar panels to ensure the new Mediclinic George is more energy-efficient and sustainable, as well as the introduction of the latest digital technology to streamline the processes within the hospital," said Karstens.
He thanked the community for their understanding during the extended process of locating the best possible site to establish the new hospital. "We look forward to a new era for the health services in George and the Southern Cape."
• It has been seven years since Mediclinic launched its development application. The initial application was on the sawmill site near the Garden Route Mall, but this was rejected.
Karstens previously told George Herald that the Mount View Resort alternative was very suitable for a new hospital as it is easily accessible from the N2 and George Airport, and will enhance inclusivity for all communities.
