GEORGE NEWS - Conspiracy theories abound following the murder of a well-known 40-year-old Lawaaikamp resident, Dtijihada Ihorihoze. Ihorihoze was gunned down in front of his home on Friday 21 February. The shooting was allegedly carried out execution style by an unknown assassin, who fled the scene after the incident.
Ihorihoze, orginally from Burundi, has been living in Lawaaikamp for many years and was involved with the Simunye Football Club in the neighbourhood.
According to eyewitnesses, a suspicious-looking man acting like a municipal employee cleaning the street, was hanging around Ihorihoze's house early on Friday morning. When the deceased drove out of his garage, the man went up to the vehicle and fired several shots directly at him. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.
The police have not established a motive for the killing and would not confirm rumours that the assassination was drug related. By Wednesday afternoon no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Lindinkosi Yoko on 044 803 3302.
Police officer investigated for murder
On the same day, Friday 21 February, Thembalethu police opened a case of murder following the death of a 22-year-old man in Africa Street. The body of Nkosinathi Tom was found lying next to the road at about 22:00 by patrolling police officers.
He had sustained two gunshot wounds. A police source told George Herald that an off-duty police officer from Cape Town, who was visiting in Thembalethu, is implicated in the matter.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are not known, but there are allegations that the police officer fired his gun in self-defense.
Southern Cape police communications officer Sgt Chris Spies confirmed that the incident is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate "due to the fact that an off-duty police official is implicated in the matter".
