GEORGE NEWS - More information has emerged about the death of a man who was killed after he allegedly tried to attack the police last weekend in Thembalethu.
He died on Sunday morning after warning shots were fired by the police.
Eden Cluster Commander, Maj-Gen Oswald Reddy, gave more information regarding the incident at the Gender-based Violence and Femicide Summit held at the Conville Community Centre on Monday 25 November.
According to Reddy, a woman came to the Thembalethu police station at 05:00 on Sunday morning, 24 November, to ask for protection against her boyfriend, who beat her. Two policemen accompanied her to where she was staying with the man, so that she could fetch her clothes and personal belongings.
When they arrived at the house, the boyfriend allegedly became aggressive and violent. It is alleged that he started beating the woman in front of the police. When the police tried to intervene he allegedly drew a knife and attacked them. The police fired warning shots and the man was killed.
According to a spokesperson of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), the identities and ages of the deceased and police members are yet to be made known.
- In another incident on Friday night, 22 November, a 30-year old woman in Thembalethu was killed when she was allegedly shot by an off-duty police sergeant from Middelburg, Eastern Cape. According to Sontaga Seisa, acting national spokesperson for Ipid, it is believed that the victim was the officer's girlfriend's sister. She died on the scene. The suspect allegedly committed suicide on Saturday. Ipid is investigating the matter.
