GEORGE NEWS - The first group of George learners that had completed Lancewood's Window to my Future youth development programme (YDP), received their certificates on Wednesday 28 November.
The learners from Parkdene, Pacaltsdorp, George High, Thembalethu and Imizamo Yethu Secondary schools were accepted into the programme after outshining other candidates in a rigorous selection process.
The Lancewood Corporate Social Investment Philosophy aims at making a marked and sustainable difference in the community of George. "It is of prime importance that we invest in the development of our younger generation to ensure that we build a strong foundation for future generations" said the programme director of Lancewood’s 'Window to my Future' programme, Margaret Africa.
The company's philosophy is to offer young people a glimpse of the future that can be theirs once they become part of the programme. This initiative contributes to the development cycle of the youth and provides those opportunities that often seem unobtainable.
Keynote speaker Dr Gillian Arendse entertained the learners, parents and guests alike with his interesting, humorous presentation. Arendse told an anecdote: A little boy tells his grandfather, "Papa, you know nothing", and Papa answered, "Yes my boy, I don't know much about the technology you are playing with, but my generation invented it. The question you need to ask yourself is what you are going to do as a generation. It is great to look cool with what someone else has come up with but soon you will have to ask yourself what you will do for humankind."
The Lancewood YDP connected the beneficiaries with mentors who helped them achieve their aim of enhancing competencies in key academic subjects, life skills, community development and civil responsibility. The programme also assisted them in gaining access to tertiary institutions and ultimately stepping into a desired professional field.
Lancewood would like to thank the principals, teachers and parents for allowing Lancewood to be involved in the future of your most precious asset, your children.
