GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality has a drive-through donation centre where individuals, businesses and organisations can drop off food, hygiene and sanitary products, clothes and blankets for soup kitchens and the homeless during the Covid-19 crisis period.
Open weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00, and weekends from 08:00 to 17:00, the centre at the Civic Centre in York Street serves as a depot from which the municipal Social Services department distributes supplies about 140 home-based soup kitchens in vulnerable communities across the municipal area.
Most of these kitchens serve two meals a day, making a difference in the lives of more than 7 000 residents.
Essential items
Types of items that will make a big difference include maize meal, wheat flour, yeast, milk, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, cooking oil, samp, beans, macaroni, soup powder, stock and fresh or frozen vegetables, meat and fish.
Cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, sponges, dishcloths, bleach, all-purpose cleaner, hand wash, laundry soap and hygiene products such as soap and hand cream will be welcome.
Those who want to donate using online grocery delivery services can make up an online basket and enter the delivery address as Drive-through centre City Hall, 71 York Street, George.
Donated items are sanitised and then stored in and distributed from the banquet hall, which has been disinfected and is managed to conform to strict health and hygiene protocols.
The centre is being managed by the George Municipality Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management departments in coordination with George Municipality Community and Social Development section. For enquiries, contact Johann Crouse on 073 301 9595.
