GEORGE NEWS - An intelligence-driven operation by the Hawks and the Eden Cluster crime combating task team foiled a possible cash-in-transit robbery in George last Monday, 6 January, when the suspects were apprehended before they could execute their plan.
According to Col Katlego Mogale of the Hawks, David Ndamase (58), Luthando Bartman (35), Nicolas Tyali (65), Sakhekile Manga (27), Sicelo Dyani (35), Sivuyile Bathembu (37), Siyabulela Mabuya (44) and Vuyo Mjwango (43) were arrested in Thembalethu.
"The team pounced on the group who were allegedly on their way to commit a cash-in-transit robbery. They were travelling in an Isuzu bakkie that was reported stolen in Khayelitsha. The vehicle was intercepted in Qhaw Street, Thembalethu," said Mogale.
During the search that followed, unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found. This will be sent for forensic analysis to see if it can be linked to previous crimes.
The suspects have been charged with conspiracy to commit an armed robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
They appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on 8 January where the case was postponed until yesterday, 15 January. At the time of going to print, the accused were still waiting to appear.
