GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - There was big cause for celebration at Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) this morning at the official opening of the new GRDM Regional Fire Station in George.
The fire station is situated in Pearl Street, just off PW Botha Boulevard.
Cllr Cobus Meiring welcomed several dignitaries, including GRMD Mayor Memory Booysen, mayors of towns in the Garden Route, as well as Western Cape Provincial Minister of Environmental Affairs and Development and Planning, Anton Bredell, who delivered the keynote speech.
GRDM Municipal Manager Monde Stratu gave an overview of the journey they had to institute the new fire station.
He also asked attendees to observe a moment of silence for the former fire chief, Freddy Thaver, who had passed away. Stratu said he wanted to honour Thaver and Clive Africa, director of Community Services, who was absent due to illness, as these two men were very passionate about this project.
