GEORGE NEWS - The old Toll House had become a symbol of the past and of the tenacity of the human spirit. It had endured many onslaughts but it shall rise again, stronger and better.
Daleen Engelbrecht of Friends of the Toll House says to make this happen they need everyone's support.
One way of showing your support is joining the Friends of the Toll House at their wine-tasting fundraiser next Thursday, 22 November, at 18:30 at the George Museum in the Sayers hall.
"Many George businesses had pledged help by donating materials, but money is still needed to hire properly skilled labour like stone masons. All the many utensils, instruments and furniture inside the Toll House had also perished. We have to start from scratch to find historical pieces to display once the building has been repaired."
Some of the items lost in the fire were a working record player from 1923 and a very old piano. If you have any such item to donate, please contact Gerda Stols, chairman of Friends of the Toll House, on 083 772 8252.
