GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Four prospective mothers received in vitro fertilisation (IVF) at the first ever fertility clinic in the Garden Route last week.
The George Fertility Clinic is operated from a procedure room at the George Surgical Centre where all the procedures are carried out. It features a fully equipped IVF laboratory where the first embryos are currently being monitored in an incubator until they are ready for transfer.
Sub-specialists from the collaborating fertility clinics in this project, Aevitas in Cape Town and Fembryo in Gqeberha, will visit George every two months on a rotational basis to carry out "batch" treatments where groups of women are scheduled.

According to local gynaecologist Dr Douwe Vellema, there is a growing demand for IVF treatment in the Southern Cape area, but in the past couples had to travel to either of the two metros.
"It is an expensive treatment and travelling and accommodation costs for two weeks, as well as having to take leave from work, has made it very inconvenient for couples and added to the cost. It is a big step to have the lab established here in George."
