Emile Conrad, the senior fireman at the Eden District Council, successfully defended his title last weekend as the 'Toughest Firefighter Alive' in South Africa. The competition was held in Cape Town.
Georgian Marinda Fourie, a volunteer firefighter at Eden, also won gold and is the female 'Toughest Firefighter Alive'.
Conrad said that the team from Eden did exceptionally well. "It is great that Eden now has both the male and female titles. We work together as a team and train together at the CrossFit box under Jan Fourie, Marinda's husband."
Another firefighter from Eden who also took gold was David van Niekerk in the 40-45 age division. Bonita Conrad, Emile's wife, won bronze in the 18-29 year ladies division. Bonita is also a volunteer at the station.
Conrad is especially excited about winning the team relay gold as this means that overall Eden firefighters are the fittest in South Africa. The relay team consists of David van Niekerk, Branville Abrahams, Allister Windwaai and Emile Conrad.

The top individual Eden firefighters are, from left: Bonita Conrad (bronze 18-29 age group); Marinda Fourie (gold - female Toughest Firefighter Alive); Jan Fourie (CrossFit trainer); Emile Conrad (gold - male Toughest Firefighter Alive) and David van Niekerk (gold 40-45 age group).
