GEORGE NEWS - A fire safety workshop was recently held for George municipal crèche personnel on what to do in case of a fire breaking out. It was presented by Working on Fire (WoF) at the Lawaaikamp Community Hall, to educators from 21 early childhood centres.
Rosemarie Mehlo, a municipal social auxiliary worker, said they received a check list on the first things one should do when a fire breaks out.
Tips were shared on how to prevent fires and how to keep the crèche facilities fire-safe. Members of WoF discussed fire safety plans with the educators and assisted them with the drawing up of these plans.
"The educators found the session very valuable and insightful," said Mehlo. "The Community Development Office would like to thank WoF for this initiative."
Rayganah Rhoda of WoF said the organisation has been working with schools in fire-prone areas for a few years to educate children on fire hazards and empower the learners on key aspects of fire awareness.
"WoF teams have reached a large number of schools with the fire awareness key messages, but they have realised that educators can act as a vehicle to spearhead information sessions on fire prevention to the learners who will in turn educate their communities as well," said Rhoda.
"Our goal is to empower educators, [which] will result in fire-safety messages being spread to the communities and learners."
Topics such as evacuation plans, escape routes, impacts of fire and personal safety were discussed.
