GEORGE NEWS - The bread and butter of the Garden Route SPCA, their charity shop, suffered extensive loss after a fire broke out near its premises at about midnight on Thursday 13 October. The charity shop is situated in 100 York Mall in York Street.
"It was a very dark start to our day when we heard the news about the fire," said shop manager Rika Bouwer.
"This was followed by a weekend of uncertainty and angst as the reality of the impact of the loss of trade and stock began to set in. We depend heavily on the income the shop generates to keep our community clinic running and our inspectors on the road," Bouwer said.
The arcade has now been thoroughly inspected for structural damage. Although there was extensive loss and smoke damage to the store's stock, the building itself remains structurally sound and intact. Much to the delight and relief of GRSPCA staff and volunteers, it should be ready to reopen its doors by 1 November.
"We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all our amazing volunteers, members of the public and local businesses who rushed to our rescue with donations, helping hands and open hearts," said Bouwer.
The fire has been a major setback for the GRSPCA, but they remain optimistic and hopeful that once the shop is trading again, it will be even better than before.
Donations are still very much needed and can be dropped off at the following points:
- George SPCA: 1 Ossie Urban Street, Tamsui Industria
- AvoFit: Loerie Park, Akasia Street and 4th Street
- Alpha Lawnmowers: c/o Market and Hope streets
- Glenwood House School: in the skip provided by AM Skips
Alternatively, contact Rika Bouwer on 082 308 6862 to arrange collection.
Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates on when their doors will be open.
