GEORGE NEWS - GO GEORGE bus drivers are joining a provincial one-day strike tomorrow, Thursday 12 April, for all members of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu).
According to Municipal Spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose, this will, unfortunately, impact on the bus service.
"GO GEORGE will endeavour to limit the negative impact by utilising other staff with valid bus driver's licences and some of the non-striking drivers to operate some of the buses on main routes," she said.
These will include Route 2 Blanco-CBD, Route 1A New Dawn Park-CBD, Route 1B Harmony Park-CBD, Route 53 Rosemoor-CBD and Route 7 Garden Route Mall-CBD.
Regional secretary of Numsa, Vuyo Lufele, said no protest action is planned for tomorrow, but he promised activity on 25 April when the union plans a national strike.
Lufele said Numsa has about 170 GO GEORGE drivers as union members.
According to Lufele the strike is in connection with the implementation of the new national minimum wage scheduled for 1 May.
"It is far below the poverty line. We can easily call it a slave wage," he said.
